Morning Connections
The city was quiet when I woke up, more quiet than seemed possible after the 2am singing, partying, and celebrating. In the stillness, I slipped out of bed to stand in a steamy shower. Dick was still asleep, he tends to sleep more on vacation while I generally sleep less.

I pushed the window open, and the air conditioned apartment air rushed out while the cool, humid, sticky morning air rushed in.
I leaned out over the rail and breathed deeply, taking in the smells of food, smoke, smog, ocean, and people. I was surrounded by other apartments, almost all dark. I wondered what it would be like to live here, pressed up against so many other people.
Movement caught my eye. Across the street, in another apartment, curtains were open and a light was turned on. A figure was awake and moving about their morning routine. I watched as they came into and out of focus in the window, but I looked away when I realized they were nude.
A woman was in her kitchen, stretching and pouring herself a cup of coffee. Her hair was long and light blonde, and what I had mistaken for clothes were actually tattoos covering one of her arms and much of her back.
She disappeared from view with her coffee cup, and I exhaled a bit of relief and disappointment.
I was getting lost in “what if I lived here” thoughts, when the sound of a window scraping open echoed across the street. I looked again, and the woman, still nude, was leaning out her side window with a cup of coffee in one hand and a joint in the other.
I stayed quiet, as I was the intruder in her early morning window time. She set down her coffee to brush her hair out of her face, and I could see that her tattoos wrapped around her neck and down toward her breasts. She took a pull off her joint, and exhaled into the breeze. I imagined I could smell it, I wondered what she was wondering about.
As I watched her, I realized my hands had gone to my own breasts, and I had pulled down my camisole to feel the morning air on my nipples. Without warning, she swept her gaze across the street and her eyes found mine as if she finally felt the intensity with which I’d been watching her.
For a moment, we stared at each other in shock. I was just about to disappear from the window and not leave the apartment for the rest of our trip when I saw her laugh a bit. I waved, awkwardly, and she waved back.
She took another pull off her joint and turned a bit in the window so I could see her better. Her tattoos did extend down between her breasts to her stomach.

He handed me my latte, and I stared at him a little. “Did this just happen?”

I smiled. “I love those chance encounters, it’s fun to connect with people when you’re not expecting it.” I realized I was sweating a bit. “I think I need some air, do you mind if we have our coffee by the window? It’s a beautiful morning, and we can enjoy the view.”
