i guess my parents just didn’t think muslim girls should be out in nature. plus, i never felt entirely comfortable going out in a hijab when everyone around me was in swimsuits, you know? i just wanted to blend in. so getting to explore nature here has been really, really special. and doing it in america makes it even more exciting. this country has so much stunning nature, and a lot of it is free—did you know the u.s. has over 400 national parks, and most of them don’t even charge an entry fee?

we went to this beautiful lake in potomac, and honestly, it felt like something out of a dream. you just walk right in, and it’s so serene. i was ready to do my good deed for the day and pick up plastic trash, but there wasn’t much to find—which, trust me, is a huge contrast to places like bali, where the beaches are full of rubbish (and let’s be real, some of it’s just gross, like tampons floating in the water 😖). it was amazing to see how clean this place was.

and the best part? it was practically deserted when we arrived in the morning! by the time we finished the trail, it was packed with people, but we got that early magic all to ourselves. there were some other, let’s say... wholesome things i’d mention, but OF guidelines, you know how it is 😉.

anyway, the whole experience made me feel so alive. plus, there were cameras all along the trail, which made me feel a lot better in case we got lost—safety first, right?
