Koppitz staged a nude ballet dancer from the Vienna State Opera in front of three women dressed in black to draw attention to form, line and the play of light on the nude skin. The composition creates a dramatic effect and no doubt established Koppitz as an artist of the Austrian avant-garde in the early decades of the 20th century.
