Some of us are lucky enough to experience something that electrifies our soul, something so rare and exquisite that until we’ve seen and felt the existence of it, we were unaware that such feelings could even exist. I hope you/we all find these inner connections one day. Once graced with the presence of being exposed to whatever is your thing, you long to be in the presence of it for as long as possible, but you will be content with whatever time it reveals itself. As quickly as it comes from nowhere it puts on a magnificent show of dazzling colors, streaks, bands, and glows, but it will slowly fade leaving its viewers in their induced state of stupor. It may suddenly disappear, but you can’t begrudge something so exquisite for any reason. You settle into the knowledge that it will be back if you’re willing to wait, at times risking the loss of sleep and normalcy to possibly see it again. This thing proves the most wondrous things won’t always shine or be visible in the daylight, but only when someone looks deep into the darkness of the night. The thing for me is the northern lights. The lights are so breathtaking, so unearthly that once I saw them for the first time I’ve never stopped dreaming about the possibility of seeing them again. It is said a lack of sleep can make you crazy, but for those who take the time to absorb the lights you don’t worry about sleep you may forfeit, or the cost of lunacy for just the potential to be in the space of this phenomenon. The gases exploding from the sun into our atmosphere is proof to me that extraordinary things can come from a perceived nowhere, reminding and/or informing us of how much larger and bigger the world is than we can ever comprehend. Under the night sky with the stars illuminated so vibrantly a kind of magic makes the wonder of the world resurface, despite however superficially or deeply that euphoria had been suppressed. May we all find and enjoy the euphorias of our lives, appreciate and consume them for however long they last. Last night I knew the forecast supported the aurora… after drifting to sleep I suddenly awake around 2:20 am. A glance outside confirmed a connection meant for me was waiting. The normal bitter cold washing across my body only enhanced last night’s experience and sensations of the northern lights. Something so radical can’t come without a little discomfort and loss of control. The observation was surreal, the sound of the waves crashing against the boat while the sky danced for the earth.
